USF Women's Golf Sixth After Day One of Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational

(San Jose, CA) - USF women's golf battled the elements and a challenging golf course and sit in sixth place after two rounds of the 2010 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational Monday at the Almaden Golf Course. The Dons bounced back from a tough opening round to card the third lowest second round in the field at 300 on the par-72 course playing at 6,223 yards.
Seniors Natasha Podmore (76, 72) and Christina Stockton (77, 71) share eighth place in the field at 4-over 148. Podmore led the Dons with 30 holes at par or better with a pair of birdies, while Stockton carded a team-best five birdies and carded 27 holes at par of better. Both suffered just one bogey in the second round.
Tournament host San Jose State is the 36-hole leader at 595 (295, 300), six strokes in front of UC Davis at 601 (304, 297). No. 14 Cal sits in third at 602 (301,301), two shots in front of Fresno State at 604 (300, 304). UC Irvine rounds out the top-five at 608 (299, 309), just one stroke in front of the Dons at 609 (309, 300).
SJSU's Cristina Corpus leads all individuals with a one-under par 143, including a 71 in the second round after making birdies on the final two holes of the day. She leads by one shot over Caroline Hedwall of Oklahoma State and Louisa Lies of Fresno State. Hedwall shot the low first round score with a 69.
San Francisco, along with the rest of the 16-team field, survived a Weather Channel day featuring wind, sun, hail and even a rainbow. The Dons look make a move up the leader board in Tuesday's final round and seek their first top-five finish of the spring season. The Dons tee off beginning with an 8:00 AM shotgun start.
