USF Women's Golf Earns Runner-Up Finish at 2004 BYU Dixie Classic
April 6, 2004
(St. George, UT) - USF women's golf fired a final round 301 in final round action of the 2004 BYU Dixie Classic at Entrada at Snow Canyon Golf Course, securing their second consecutive runner-up finish in the event. The Lady Dons shot a 903 (294, 308, 301), finishing behind a red hot UNLV squad that blistered the course for a final round 289. The Rebels finished at 876 (296, 291, 289) to win the tournament for the second straight year.
San Diego State placed third with a 919 (297, 314, 308), host BYU finished fourth at 922 (300, 314, 308), while Colorado State rounded out the top five with a 929 (318, 303, 308).
Junior Mariko Shimozaki was the top finisher for San Francisco, firing an even-par 72 to finish third with a 221 (73, 76, 72). Sophomore Nikki Jacoby shot a 225 (74, 77, 74), good for eighth place, while defending medalist senior Jordan Auten added a 228 (72, 79, 77), good for a share of 10th place. Senior Kristi Larsen finished tied for 17th with a 229 (75, 76, 78).
Head coach Sara Range was pleased with her team's performance and believes it will help the Lady Dons gain momentum heading into the West Coast Conference Championships April 12-13 at Riverbend Golf Course in Fresno.
"I am proud of the way we competed yesterday. It would have been nice to make more of a push against UNLV, but I think we learned some things today. Mariko did a great job. She was very steady and made some great shots. Nikki had a great start today and led us with four birdies today. We have two tournaments in the next week and this showed us what we need to improve upon," Range said.
USF returns to action when they compete in the 2004 Peg Barnard Invitational, hosted by Stanford April 10-11 at the Stanford Golf Course.
