April 7, 2003

(St. George, UT) - USF women's golf fired a season-low round of 296 to burst to a round one lead at the 2003 BYU Dixie Classic Monday at the Sunbrook Golf Course. Sophomore Mariko Shimozaki fired a one-under 71 to share the lead after 18 holes, while junior Jordan Auten fired a one-over 73 to establish a new career-low in the process. Auten is second on the leaderboard.

Defending team champion UC Irvine (299), Nevada (301), Idaho (303) and Denver (308) complete the top-five. San Francisco won the event in the 2001 campaign.

Shimozaki was the model of consistency with 13 pars, three birdies and a pair of bogies in the opening round on the Point Blackrock Course. Senior Susie Laing shot a 75 in the opening round with 13 pars and one birdie. Senior Lyndsey Devenish fired an opening round 77 for the Lady Dons.

Under the tournament format, the 23-team field played a complete round and nine holes of the second round. Auten continued to roll in the first nine holes, carding an eagle on the par-five third hole on the Woodbridge Point Course.

USF returns to second round action Tuesday. Live scoring is available for the event on www.usfdons.com.
