(St. George, UT) - USF women's golf shot a 306 in the opening round of the 2002 BYU Dixie Classic at Sunbrook Golf Course, powered by an even par 72 from junior Susie Laing as the Lady Dons share sixth place after the first day. San Francisco, the defending champions of the event, share sixth place with Colorado State University. UC Irvine shot an impressive 295 in the first round to take the early lead on the Par 72 5,734 yard course.

Idaho (299), the host Cougars (301), San Diego State (303) and Denver (304) round out the top five in the 54 hole event. The Lady Dons are well within striking distance at 11 strokes back of the Anteaters.

Laing led the way for USF as she has for the majority of the season and her opening round 72 was good for a share of fourth place on the individual side and looks to improve on last season's seventh place individual finish at the event. Walaiak Satarak of UC Irvine seized the top of the individual leader board with a four-under 68, while teammate Stella Lee fired a 70. San Diego State's Heather Rollo fired a 71 for third place.

Freshman Mariko Shimozaki followed Laing in the standings, carding a 77 for a share of 25th place, while fellow freshman Laura Viveros shot a 78 for a share of 39th place. Lisa Chen who earned a share of fourth place in the 2001 edition shot a 79.

USF completes the tournament on Tuesday with another 27 holes. The BYU Dixie Classic is broken into two days of competition featuring 27 holes each day.
