(Madera, CA) - USF women's golf shot a 298 in the opening round and followed by a 289 for a two-round tally of 587 in the first day of the 2004 West Coast Conference Championships at the Riverbend Country Club. The Lady Dons are in second place behind defending champion Pepperdine, who shot a 574 (289, 285).
Senior Kristi Larsen leads San Francisco on the leader board in second place after shooting an even-par 72 in the opening round and a 69 in the second for 141. Larsen trails the Waves' Carolina Llano, who shot 139 (68, 71).
Larsen birdied five holes in her opening round, but bogeyed a pair of par-fives - numbers four and eight, but the second round was a different story. Larsen eagled number four and birdied number eight en route to equaling her single round low.
Freshman Kristin Nichols picked a great time to play her best rounds of the season. Nichols is in fifth place after posting a 146 (72, 74) - her lowest rounds of the year. Nichols' morning round featured birdies on her first and last hole.
Sophomore Nikki Jacoby also played well for USF carding a 148 (76, 72), good for sixth place. Jacoby recorded seven straight pars in the opening round and tallied three consecutive birdies in the second round. Junior Mariko Shimozaki, a two-time All-WCC First Team selection struggled with some bad luck, but nounced back after a difficult opening round for a two-over 74 in the afternoon.
USF head coach Sara Range was thrilled with the way her team played.
"I am very happy with the way we played today. We came out and competed. I am so happy for Kristin. We are so proud of her. Kristi had another outstanding day for us and Nikki also played some great golf. Mariko had some really bad luck today and had a lot of putts lip out, but she will bounce back," Range stated.
"We have our work cut out for us tomorrow. We want to push Pepperdine and put ourselves in a position to win, but they played very well today," Range continued.
Santa Clara at 600 (304, 296) is in third place, followed by Gonzaga at 613 (308, 305) and Portland is in fifth place with a 645 (320, 325).
San Francisco, a two-time team champion (1997, 2001) has posted five runner-up finishes in the eight year history of the event. The Lady Dons begin play in the final round of the WCC Championship Tuesday at 8:00 AM.
