San Francisco Mens' and Women's Golf In Second Place At WCC Championships

(Fresno) - USF men's and women's golf teams finished the opening rounds of the 2002 West Coast Conference Tournament Monday at Riverbend Golf Course in Fresno. Both the Dons and the Lady Dons are in second place and both trail Pepperdine University, who ranks #11 in the nation in both the men's and the women's programs. USF men fired an opening round 293 and followed it up with a 300 for a two-round total of 593, trailing the Waves who fired a 567 (282, 285) on the par-72, 6,966 yard course. Teammates Tom Semereaux (74, 72) and Ryan Wilson (72, 74) each fired a 146 on the first 36 holes for a share of third place. Robert Frye shot a 147 (73, 74) to join Semereaux and Wilson in the top-10 sharing sixth place. San Francisco's women's team opened up defense of the 2001 WCC Championship with an 36-hole total of 618 (316, 302). After struggling in the first round, the Lady Dons rebounded with a 302 in the second 18. Pepperdine, the runner-up last season is in the lead after the opening day with an impressive 519 (298, 293). Junior Susie Laing led the way for the Lady Dons once again with a 151 (78, 73), good for fourth place after the first two rounds. Laing was the 2001 WCC individual runner-up. Freshman Mariko Shimozaki shot a 155 (76, 79) to take eighth place, while Junior Lyndsey Devenish (80, 76) and sophomore Jordan Auten (82, 74) each carded a 156 for a share of 10th place.
