(Stanford, CA) - USF shot a 295 in the final round of the 2002 NCAA Division I Women's Golf West Regional for a three day total of 914 (315, 304, 295) to finish ninth in their second consecutive regional appearance. San Francisco finished six strokes behind USC's 908 (309, 307, 292) as the Women of Troy captured eighth place and the final berth in the NCAA National Tournament field from the region.

West Coast Conference rival Pepperdine won the co-championship along with UCLA with scores of 883. Also qualifying for a trip to nationals hosted by the University of Washington at Washington National Golf Course were Cal, Arizona, host Stanford, Arizona State, Washington and USC.

Freshman Mariko Shimozaki finished strong, firing a one-over 73 for a 226 (75,78, 73) to finish in a share of 25th place. Shimozaki may qualify for the national tournament as an individual. Junior Susie Laing shot a 229 (84, 69, 76) to finish tied for 37th place, while junior Lyndsey Devenish earned a 43rd place tie with a 232 (77, 81, 74). After struggling in the opening round, junior Lisa Chen came up big for San Francisco on the final 18 holes, firing an even par 72 to propel USF to the top-10.

USF was making just the second NCAA Regional Appearance in program history and the second straight under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Sara Range. Last season in their inaugural appearance in the postseason, the Lady Dons posted a 17th place finish in the 2001 NCAA Central Regional, hosted by Purdue.
