Oct. 4, 2004
(Sammamish, WA) - USF women's golf got off to a slow start during the opening round of the 2004 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, shooting a 318 Monday, good for a share of ninth place. Scores were high on the opening day at the Sahalee Country Club and the start of the tournament was delayed 90 minutes due to heavy fog in the morning.
Oklahoma State shot a 296, good for a two stroke lead on Pepperdine, who carded a 298. Oregon shot 300, USC posted a 303 and Stanford rounded out the top-five with a 308. The host Huskies entered the event ranked No. 2 in the nation according to Golf Week and share sixth place with Washington State at 310.
Freshman Jessica Potter led the Dons with a 78, good for a share of 25th place. Potter carded three birdies to lead the team and rank sixth overall in the field. Sophomore Kristin Nichols shot a 79, while senior Mariko Shimozaki had 80 for USF.
Head coach Sara Range looks for her team to improve in the second and third rounds after learning important lessons Monday.
"This is a very long golf course and they needed every club in their bag today. If we can use what we learned today in the next two rounds we will finish strong," Range said.
