Oct. 5, 2004

(Sammamish, WA) - USF women's golf bounced back from a tough opening round to shoot a 304 in the second round of the 2004 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at the Sahalee Country Club. The Dons own a two round tally of 622 (318, 304), good for eighth place heading into the final round on Wednesday.

Oklahoma State leads the tournament with a 597 (296, 301), good for a seven-stroke lead over Oregon at 604 (300, 304). Southern California is in third place at 605 (304, 301), followed by Pepperdine at 614 (298, 316). Washington State rounds out the top-five with a 615 (310, 305), two strokes in front of the host Huskies at 617 (310, 307), who entered the tournament ranked No. 2 in the country by Golf Week.

USF's 304 equaled the second lowest round of the day. The Cowgirls and the Trojans shot 301 while Oregon also carded a 304.

Senior Mariko Shimozaki and junior Nikki Jacoby and each shot 74 to lead the charge for the Dons, who entered the day in 10th place in the 14-team field. After two rounds Shimozaki stands at 154 (80, 74) and shared the team lead with three birdies on the day. Jacoby stands at 155 (81, 74) and was exceptionally steady on the long and challenging golf course and bogeyed just three holes and led the team for the round with 14 pars. Sophomore Kristin Nichols had quite a day on the golf course and ended up with a 76. Nichols carded an eagle on the par-4 fourth hole and added three birdies.

Shimozaki vaulted 20 places on the leader board and owns a share of 21st place, while Jacoby and Nichols share 26th.

USF head coach Sara Range was pleased with the way her team responded after a challenging opening round.

"I am really proud of the way they played today. They showed a lot of composure and showed they learned a lot from the round yesterday. Nikki and Mariko were so steady all day and Kristin continued to amaze me with the way she competed and battled out there," Range said.

San Francisco competes in the final round of the tournament Wednesday. Check USFDons.com for live scoring, final stats and a complete tournament recap.
