(Sammamish, WA) - USF women's golf shot a final round of 316 for a final total of 938 (318, 304, 316) to finish with a share of seventh place at the 2004 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington. The Dons played the back nine at seven over as a team, but struggled on the front on a day where only two teams in the field managed to score better than 310.
Oklahoma State won the event, with an 899 (296, 301, 302), the host Huskies shot 918 (310, 307, 301) and vaulted four spots on the final day to share second place with Oregon (300, 304, 314). USC finished with 926 (303, 301, 321) and Pepperdine at 614 rounded out the top-five teams.
Senior Mariko Shimozaki was the high finisher for the Dons, placing 15th with a score of 154 (80, 74, 76). Sophomore Kristin Nichols (79, 76, 82), junior Nikki Jacoby (81, 74, 82) and freshman Jessica Potter (78, 83, 76) all finished tied for 31st place.
San Francisco finished in front of three Pac-10 teams - Stanford (ninth), Cal (10th) and Oregon State (13th) - and tied Washington State (310, 305, 323).
Head coach Sara Range believes the tournament taught her young team some valuable lessons.
"I was pleased with the way we kept our composure and continued to battle under tough conditions. This is the toughest golf course we will play on this season. We played very well on the first nine holes. We just need to learn how to put a complete round together. Mariko did another great job today and was just extremely steady for us," Range said.
USF returns to action when they compete in the 2004 San Diego State Aztec Invitational, beginning Monday, October 18 at The Auld Course.
