USF Finishes Fourth at 2004 San Diego State Aztec Invitational

(Chula Vista) - After a six hour first round and a second round called due to darkness, round three of the 2004 San Diego State Aztec Invitational won't happen at all. Inclement weather halted the tournament at The Auld Course after USF women finally completed their second round early Tuesday morning. San Francisco finished tied for fourth place with a 603 (298, 305) along with BYU (305, 298). Baylor won the tournament with a 590 (291, 299) followed by Northern Arizona (298, 303) and Long Beach State (298, 303) who both carded 601.

Senior Mariko Shimozaki was the top finisher for USF in a share of seventh place with a 147 (75, 72) and turned in the third lowest score of the second round with an even-par 72. Junior Nikki Jacoby tied for 14th at 150 (75, 75), while freshman Jessica Potter had 153 (72, 81), good for a share of 26th. Freshman Sydney Roughton shot 155 (78, 77) for a share of 32nd.

Head coach Sara Range was pleased with the way her team responded to challenging conditions, especially last night when they were trying to finish round two in the pouring rain as darkness fell.

"I'm happy with the way this team responded to adversity. Conditions were extremely challenging, especially when it got dark and I am proud of the way they responded to the challenge. Mariko did an outstanding job. She was really focused and turned in a great second round despite some obstacles," Range said.

USF competes in their final event of the Fall season when they compete in the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout, beginning Monday November 1 at the Anthem Country Club.
