USF Women Set New Program Record With Final Round 288
Oct. 30, 2002
(Oahu) - USF women's golf stormed back from a tough opening day at the 2002 Kent Youel Invitational and posted a new program single round record when they shot a final round 288 at the Kapolei Golf Course. The previous low came last fall when USF fired a 294 in the final round of the 2001 Vandal Fall Invitational. Sophomore and Hawaii native Mariko Shimozaki fired a career-low three-under 69 in her final round to lead the charge, while senior Susie Laing shot a two-under 70. Senior Lyndsey Devenish (75, 75, 72) was the top finisher for USF earning a share of 11th with a 222 and fired an even-par 72 to close out the tournament. Shimozaki (77, 77, 69) finished tied for 16th with a 223, while Laing (81, 74, 70) tied for 21st with a 225. Junior Jordan Auten (72, 82, 77) bounced back after a tough second round and shot a 231, good for a share of 37th. With the low final round score, USF vaulted two spots to finish in the top-five, the highest jump by any team in the field. Cal (285, 296, 289) won the tournament with a sparkling 870, followed by UCLA (295, 301, 302) at 888, Stanford (302, 297, 294) for 893 and New Mexico (309, 297, 292) placed fourth with a 898, followed by the Lady Dons in fifth. USF head coach Sara Range is pleased with the way her team responded to the challenges on the final round. "It is extremely encouraging to see how they responded. We needed to end the tournament strong, especially since it is our last one of the fall season. They competed really well. It was nice to see Mariko break through and I am happy with the way Lundsey played. Susie also came back in the final round which is a good sign for us," Range stated.
USF returns to action when they host the 2003 Bay Area Classic February 18-19 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo.
