USF Women's Golf Shoots Season-Best 284 in the Final Round of Las Vegas Founders Showdown
Nov. 3, 2004
(Las Vegas) - USF women's golf shot a four-under 284 on the final round of the 2004 Las Vegas Founders Showdown and vaulted to a sixth place finish in the elite event, hosted by UNLV at the Anthem Country Club. Four USF golfers shot par or better, led by junior Nikki Jacoby with a two-under 70. Senior Mariko Shimozaki and freshman Jessica Potter each carded a one-under 71, while freshman Casey Gee added an even-par 72.
Potter (71, 74, 71) shared tournament runner-up honors with Washington's Sung Ea Lee (74, 74, 68) both carding 216. The Rebel's Hwanhee Lee (74, 71, 70) won the event at 215. It is the second top-three showing for Potter this season after placing third in her first collegiate event at the 2004 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Invitational. Potter led the team with nine birdies and carded an eagle in the opening round and shared the team lead with 34 pars.
Jacoby turned in a masterful final round recording three birdies and just one bogey and was outstanding with the putter and vaulted from a share of 35th place after two rounds to a share of 19th. Shimozaki turned in a similar jump going from 46th to 28th and carded three birdies in the round. Shimozaki shared the team lead in pars for the tournament with 34. Gee shot even par in her third collegiate round and showed dramatic improvement from the opening round to the finale.
UNLV won the event with 875 (296, 292, 287), followed by #3 Washington at 881 (294, 306, 281). Stanford shot 890 (301, 298, 291), UC Irvine shot 892 (307, 296, 289) and Texas Tech rounded out the top-five with 893 (299, 295, 299), just three strokes in front of San Francisco at 896 (311, 301, 284).
"I am really proud of the way we performed," USF head coach Sara Range said. "We showed a lot of poise and composure on the golf course today. Everyone contributed and we showed we can compete in a very strong national field. This was a great way to close the Fall Season."
USF's 284 was one stroke shy of matching the Dons' single round record of 283 set in the opening round of the 2003 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Invitational.
San Francisco does not compete until February when they kick off their Spring Season by hosting the 2005 Bay Area Classic February 21-22 at the Boulder Ridge Country Club.
