(Austin, TX) - USF women's golf closed the Fall season in impressive fashion posting a runner-up finish Tuesday at the Challenge at Onion Creek. The Dons shot a 2-over par 842 (265, 288, 289) on the par-70 course playing at 5,938 yards. The 54-hole score is the lowest turned in by San Francisco in program history and junior Tinna Johannsdottir's score of 208 is the lowest ever carded by an individual.
San Francisco started with a flourish smashing the single-round team record by a whopping 18 strokes with a 265 in the first round. The previous low round was 283 turned in at the 2003 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic.
USF took an eight shot lead into the final round but could not hold off a charging No. 24 Texas A&M team. The Aggies closed with a 278 to win the team title at 839 (286, 275, 278). San Francisco posted quality wins against No. 29 Texas, No. 34 Texas Tech, No. 45 Iowa State and No. 46 Wisconsin.
Johannsdottir finished third overall at 2-under 208 (64, 73, 71) and carded 10 birdies in the tournament. Senior Christina Stockton placed fifth at even-par 210 (70, 71, 69) with a team-high 14 birdies. Senior Natasha Podmore also posted a top-10 finish in a share of sixth place at 1-over 211 (65, 71, 75).
San Francisco's opens the spring season Monday, February 8, 2010 when it competes in the Gold Rush Invitational hosted by Long Beach State.
NOTES: USF's previous 54-hole tournament low came last season in the Kent Youel Invitational (867)... defending West Coast Conference Player of the Year Danielle Cvitanov held the previous 54-hole tournament low with a 210 at the 2008 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic.
