Women's Golf Opens 2003 Spring Season When They Host The Luna Bay Area Classic
Feb. 16, 2003 (San Francisco) - USF and Cal will serve as co-hosts for the 2003 LUNA Bay Area Classic. The popular event, now in its seventh year takes place at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo, CA Feb. 18-19. The Arnold Palmer designed course hosts the event for the fifth time. The par-72 course will play at 5,931 yards for the 36-hole event. The 2003 edition of the Bay Area Classic boasts a strong field, highlighted by a pair of top-10 teams, with Pac-10 rivals #9 Washington and #10 Cal squaring off. San Francisco rates 47th, while Oregon State also rates 50th in the current Golfweek rankings. Both USF and Cal have turned in strong performances in the event with the Golden Bears breaking through last year, shooting a school record 284 on the final day to win the Classic for the first time. Their final round of 582 is the new tournament record. Cal's Anne Walker captured individual medalist honors. Last season, USF placed fourth with a 617. In addition to the Golden Bears and co-host USF, the tournament field includes Denver, Gonzaga, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Nevada-Reno, Oregon State, Portland State, Santa Clara, UC Irvine and 2001 Bay Area Classic champion Washington.
