(Vallejo, CA) - USF women's golf opened up the 2002 spring season co-hosting the 2002 Bay Area Classic at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo. USF fired a 302 in the opening round, good for third place after 18 holes. Idaho shot a 297 for the first round lead, followed closely by co-host Cal, who shot a 298. San Diego State (304) and Denver (305) round out the top-five of the 16-team field competing in the sixth annual event hosted by the Lady Dons and the Golden Bears.

Cal's Anne Walker fired a two-under 70 to lead the field after opening round play, followed by Christine Anast who shot an even par 72. Susie Laing and Joan Shimozaki each carded a 74 to share sixth place on the Arnold Palmer Signature Course. Hiddenbrooke also served as the host of the 2001 event won by Washington.
