(Santa Clanta, CA) - USF shot a 311 in the opening round of the 2003 Pioneer Electronic Bruin Classic hosted by UCLA, good for ninth place. The tournament is hosted by UCLA at the Robinson Ranch Valley Course playing at 6,254 yards. California fired a 296 to lead the field after day one, while UCLA's "B" team was in second place with a 300.

Pepperdine, ranked #1 in the nation by Golfweek shares third place with USC after an opening round 304, while New Mexico rounds out the top-five with a 306. The Lady Dons are in contention, just one stroke back of a three-way logjam of Stanford, Washington State and UCLA who fired a 310 in the first 18 holes of competition.

Sophomore All-American candidate Mariko Shimozaki led the way for USF with a one-over 73, good for a share of fourth place on the individual leader board. Senior Susie Laing shot a 77 and is tied for 27th.

USF returns to action in the three day event Tuesday in second round action.
