USF Shares Second Place at The 2001 Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic

Sept. 11, 2001

(Fort Collins, Colo.) - Junior Mayumi Motoyama finished with a five-under par, 211 over 54 holes to win the individual title and help Colorado State University win the team championship in the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic Tuesday.

Colorado State, playing the tournament on one of its home courses - the 6,036-yard, par-72 Ptarmigan Country Club - shot 18-over, 882, for the tournament. The Rams defeated the University of Colorado and the University of San Francisco by 13 strokes each. Both of those teams finished tied for second, 895.

USF made a charge in the third round of the tournament and shot a 296 during the final round for the low team score of the day. The runner-up finish for the Lady Dons is their third runner-up or championship finish in their last three regular season tournaments. Junior Susie Laing once again shot an even-par 72 in the final round to pace USF with a share of sixth place, finishing at 219 (75, 72, 72) to establish a new 54 hole tournament low. Sophomore Jordan Auten also fired a 76 to finish at 224 (74, 74, 76), while Lisa Chen finished in a share of 15th place with a 225 (75, 79, 71). Chen with her one-under 71 fired the first round in the red for USF this season. Junior Lydsey Devenish shot 77 on the final day for another top-20 finish at 227 (76, 74, 77) for the Lady Dons.

Due to the national tragedy, the USF women's golf team was unable to take their scheduled return flight to San Francisco and instead are driving to Los Angeles where they are scheduled to compete at the Southern California Intercollegiate, hosted by Long Beach State and UC Riverside. The event is scheduled for Sept. 17-18 at the Southern California PGA at Oak Valley.
