(Corvallis, OR) - USF men's and women's golf teams each posted a third place showing in the 2008 Giustina Memorial Classic Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club, hosted by Oregon State. The Dons shared second place in the team competition which combined the men's and women's team scores from 10 competing schools. USF's men's squad turned in a particularly strong showing in the event, finishing at 855 (283, 286, 290) just two strokes shy of the host Beavers (286, 283, 284) and Nevada (283, 286, 284) at 853. OSU won the team title on the second hole of the playoff. Washington State (859) and Oregon (860) rounded out the top-five on the men's side. It was another strong tournament for freshman Ji Hwan Park, who posted his second straight top-five finish with a runner-up showing with a six-under 210 (70, 70, 70), just two strokes off OSU's Diego Velasquez (71, 69, 68) at 208. Park led the field with 18 birdies and shared the overall lead in par-4 scoring (3.90). Junior Domingo Jojola finished in a logjam at fourth place at 213 (71, 69, 73), while junior Chris Cunningham finished tied for 12th at 213 (71, 69, 73). Jojola and Cunningham each carded 12 birdies during the tournament, while Cunningham also added an eagle. As a team, the Dons paced the field with 58 birdies, 12 more than Portland recorded in second place. San Francisco also was tops in par-5 scoring (4.70). "This was a good tournament for us," USF head coach Dr. Gary Nelson said. "We feel good about being in contention against a quality field and we beat some good teams today. We are very much looking forward to competing in our next event." San Francisco's women's team fired the second lowest round of the day at 306 and finished the tournament at 911 (301, 304, 306), five shots behind runner-up Oregon (291, 303, 312) and seven behind tournament champion OSU at 904 (303, 298, 303). Junior Danielle Cvitanov posted her second straight top-10 showing to start the 2008-09 campaign, finishing tied for sixth at 226 (76, 72, 78), two strokes in front of juniors Diana Hong (74, 76, 78) and Christina Stockton (75, 78, 75) at 228, good for a share of eighth place overall. Sophomore Tinna Johannsdottir fired her first collegiate ace in the final round for the Dons on the 155-yard No. 7 hole, using a 7-iron. The Icelander shot a final round 75 USF led the tournament field in par-3 scoring (3.17), led by Johannsdottir, who ranked second (2.92) overall at minus-one. The Dons were also second in team birdies (27), third in pars (154). Hong led the way with eight birdies, while Cvitanov paced the squad with 35 pars. San Francisco's men's team returns to action when it competes in the 2008 Saint Mary's College Invitational, beginning Monday, Spetember 29 at Poppy Hills. USF women's golf returns to action at the 2008 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington beginning Monday October 6 in Sammamish, WA.
