Women's Golf Sixth At Rainbow Fall Classic
Oct. 31, 2001 (Kapolei, HI) - USF women's golf closed out a very successful Fall Season with a sixth-place showing at the Raibow Wahine Fall Golf Classic at Kapolei Golf Course. The Lady Dons posted four consecutive top-five showings to start out the 2001-2002 season and posted their eight straight top-10 showing dating back to last season. San Francisco fired a three round 921 (307, 313, 301) in the two day event on the 5,900 yard course. San Francisco opened the tournament with a first round 307, powered by an even-par 72 from junior Susie Laing. USF faltered somewhat in the second round, carding a 313 as the Lady Dons were paced by a 75 from freshman Mariko Shimozaki, a Hawaii native. San Francisco rebounded in the third round with a 301 as Shimozaki fired a one-over 73 to pace USF. San Francisco tied the Vandals of Idaho for sixth place. Laing (8th) and Shimozaki (T-9th) each posted top-10 individual showings. Laing's performance was notable in more ways than one. Laing, who returned to her native Scotland for her sister's wedding was delayed in Amsterdam and again in San Francisco on her way to compete in Hawaii. Laing made it to the islands just in time to participate in the final six holes of the Monday practice round and played 36 holes on Tuesday on about six hours of sleep after crossing 12 time zones in 36 hours. Head coach Sara Range was extremely pleased with the effort of her team. "I am really proud of the accomplishments of my team in this tournament. We played at a very high level during the Fall and I am confident we can continue to challenge in the Spring season. I am extremely impressed by Susie Laing. She was so focused despite a lack of sleep and really carried us. Mariko also played very well in front of her friends and family. I am very proud of all of them," Range stated. San Francisco returns to competition when they host the 2002 Bay Area Classic Feb. 25-26 at Hiddenbrooke Country Club.
