USF Women's Golf Signs Four For 2004-2005 Season

Dec. 9, 2003

(San Francisco) - USF women's golf head coach Sara Range announces signings of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent (NLI) for the 2004-2005 season. Casey Gee (Sacramento, CA), Chaneng Joe (Poway, CA), Jessica Potter (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Sydney Roughton (Davis, CA) represent the largest group of incoming freshman in Range's seven-year tenure at the University of San Francisco. Range believes this class can continue the tradition of excellence established and continue to elevate the program to a national power.

"I am very excited about this class of 2004 graduates. They will be a wonderful group to work with and they are all looking forward to becoming part of the Women's Golf Program. Each of them will have an impact on this team and will continue our tradition of a winning program," Range said.

Gee compiled an impressive prep career at St. Francis High School and established a solid amateur resume in Northern California. Gee finished third in the 2003 CIF State Championships, shooting a 73 in the final round and served as co-captain and was selected to the Sacramento Bee All-City Golf First Team. A member of the winning Northern California squad in the Junior Girl's Americas Cup in Whitefish, Mont., Gee fired a final round 70 to lead the team to the title. In addition, Gee competed in the US Women's Public Links Championship, earned selection to SAY Golf Pat Campbell Jr. Association Championship Team and qualified for the 2003 Junior World Golf Championship.

Range is excited to welcome a top local player to the Lady Dons roster.

"I am excited to have one of the best local golfers coming to the University of San Francisco. I am very happy to have the opportunity to coach Casey during her college career. She will make an impact right away to this program," Range said.

Potter brings a potent blend of international experience to the Hilltop after compiling a standout prep and amateur career in Canada. A winner of the 2002 Mizuno All-Canadian Award, Potter represented Canada in Scotland in the World Junior Golf Cup and was chosen for the Canadian Team by the British Columbia Golf Association and the British Columbia Ladies Golf Association to compete in the Aaron Baddeley Junior World Championships in Fiji. Last season, Potter won the School and British Columbia Junior Girl's Provincials playing for Gleneagle Secondary School and tied for first in the Canadian Nationals in Quebec. Potter qualified for match play at the 2003 US Junior Girl's Championship in Connecticut.

Range believes Potter will make an instant impact on a program already competing at a high level.

"Jessica will be a wonderful addition to this program. She has gained valuable experience from all over the world that will benefit her in her college experience," Range said.

Joe brings outstanding golf credentials after a successful prep career at Poway High School. A qualifier for the CIF State Championships, Joe was twice named Prep Athlete of the Week as selected by the San Diego Union Tribune. An exceptional student, Joe was one of 10 selected nationally to the HP Scholastic Junior All-America Team.

Range is excited to welcome a student-athlete with enormous potential to the Hilltop.

"Chaneng is a very well-rounded individual that will bring depth to this program. She has great experience playing nationally and is extremely involved in her community," Range said.

Roughton is another local product who was a four-time All-Monticello Empire League selection at Davis High School and was a three-time team captain and team MVP. A standout amateur player, Roughton posted a runner-up finish at the 2003 NorCals and placed third at the World Junior Golf Cup at Disneyworld at Orlando. In addition, Roughton qualified for the 2003 USGA Public Links.

Range is excited to welcome Roughton to the Green and Gold.

"Sydney is a very determined and driven player. She is another top local golfer that I am excited about having the opportunity to coach. She works with an excellent professional, Don Baucom who has taken her game to the next level. She is a diamond in the rough and will surprise a lot of people next year," Range said.
