USF and NCAA soccer legend Stephen Negoesco enters his first season as the goalkeeper coach for the University of San Francisco women's soccer team after revolutionizing the college soccer landscape as the head coach for the Dons' men's soccer team. In his storied 39-year career at the helm of the USF men's squad, Negoesco won an NCAA record 544 matches and won five national championship titles (1966, 1975, 1976, 1978 & 1980). During his tenure as the NCAA's all-time wins leader and the first soccer coach to reach 500 career wins, Negoesco coached 31 All-Americans and won a record 22 West Coast Conference soccer titles. Negoesco obviously brings a wealth of experience to the post of goalkeeper coach and did not stay retired for long after completing his final season as the Dons head coach in 2000. Following his retirement, Negoesco moved into the new position of Director of Soccer at USF. Negoesco will work with sophomores Jennifer Orantes and Stephanie Beall this season, who combined for five shutouts last season. Orantes was named to the 2000 All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention in her first season. Prior to his string of unparalleled success as a coach, Negoesco played soccer at USF where he became the first West Coast player to win First Team All-America honors en route to leading his team to the 1949 NCAA co-championship. Negoesco graduated from USF in 1951 and began his coaching career at his alma mater in 1962, succeeding National Soccer Hall of Famer and mentor Gus Donoghue. Negoesco resides in Marin with his wife Mercedes. The Negoescos have six children and 16 grandchildren. Kalinoski on Negoesco: "It is an honor to have Steve Negoesco on this staff. His unsurpassed knowledge of the game will not only impact our keepers, but our entire team, including the coaching staff will benefit from him. I look forward to learning from one of the masters of the game." |
