Utah sophomore midfielder Kiley Jones scored on a breakaway at 95:53 to give the Utes the 1-0 overtime victory on a chilly and windy San Francisco night in the season opener for both teams. Junior defender Melissa Wayman had the assist for Utah. It was an evenly played game that remained scoreless through regulation thanks to the play of Utah goalkeeper Ashley Mason and Dons freshman goalkeeper Kelly Pohle. Pohle, playing in her first collegiate game, held the 26th ranked Utes to one goal in a game head coach Pamela Kalinoski said was a great team effort. "I thought it was an absolutely tremendous team performance, especially against a top 30 team. Obviously we didn't get the result we wanted, but to show what we did today was exciting," Kalinoski commented. San Francisco had a chance to score on a penalty kick by junior forward Chelsea Hunt in the 61st minute, but failed to capitalize. Hunt also narrowly missed a goal when her first half header was saved at close range. Utah had a narrow edge in shots on goal 9-7 with Utah's Mason making seven saves and USF's Pohle recording eight. USF plays at Pacific Sunday at Noon before returning home next Friday when they host Fresno State.
