(Greeley, CO) - San Francisco women's soccer took a 1-0 win over host Northern Colorado (1-2-0) in non-conference action at Jackson Soccer Stadium on Friday night. The 2-0-0 start for the Dons is the best since they won the Oregon Duck Classic by defeating Rice (1-0) and Boise State (6-0) to begin the 2003 season. Freshman forward Kelli Woodard scored her first goal and game winner as a Don, on break away shot at the 49:23 mark. Sophomore forward Keonna Robinson was credited with the assist. UNC out shot the Dons 12-10 in the contest, while USF took the corner kicks advantage 7-4. Senior midfielder Katherine Kimure and sophomore forward Keonna Robinson led the Dons with two shots. Freshmen forwards Nicole Moore and Megan Bucci each had a shot on goal. Junior forward Kristina Hall, and freshmen defenders Kallie Caldwell and Jane Shook each had a shot on the night. Bears sophomore midfielder Brittani Knott and freshman midfielder Ariel Cook offered the most trouble for the Dons, each with three shots - two on goal. Two goalies combined for the second straight shutout, senior Anika Steig and redshirt junior Kelly Pohle. Stieg recorded a save in the first half, while Pohle saved four in the second. The team was credited with a save as well.
Bears freshman goalie Kirsten Salminen had two saves. "I am thrilled with the result and performance to pick up our first away win of the season. The girls defended courageously for long periods," said head coach Mark Carr. "I am super happy for Woodi scoring her first college goal and for Kelly Pohle who made her first shutout appearance for more than a year and a half." USF continues play in Colorado, meeting the University of Colorado Buffaloes on Sunday at noon Pacific time. |
