Fresno State Squeaks By USF 2-1 In Women's Soccer Opener

Junior Forward Virginia Jenkins fired a shot past a diving Jennifer Orantes as Fresno State escaped with a 2-1 last second victory against USF Sunday in non-conference women's soccer action at Negoesco Stadium in the season opener for both teams. The late goal ruined the debut of USF head coach Pamela Kalinoski, while opposing first year coach Stacy Welp collected her inaugural win for the Bulldogs.
San Francisco and Fresno fought each other to a scoreless standstill after 45 minutes of action. Immediately after intermission USF wasted no time getting on the board as sophomore forward Rebecca Shook redirected a shot from senior forward Heidi Prestegard at the 45:49 mark. Junior midfielder Stacy Caro also earned an assist on the play.
Fresno State answered back at the 63:12 mark on an unassisted goal from freshman forward Heather Fox from 12 yards out. USF had opportunities in the second half and out-shot the Bulldogs 7-4 in the period, but were unable to convert as sophomore Fresno State keeper, Katie Klawitter recorded four saves in the half, five in the match.
Junior forward Meghan Daly and freshman defender Katie Gabrielli each attempted a pair of shots for USF and six other players fired off scoring chances. Fox led the way for the Bulldogs with a match-high four shots and added the game-winning assist.
USF women's soccer returns to action when they host the Buffaloes of Colorado Friday, Sept. 7 at Negoesco Stadium. Game time is at 2:00 PM.
