Women's Soccer Blanks Fairfield 3-0
Sept. 6, 2009
(San Francisco, CA) - USF took a 3-0 victory over Fairfield University en route to a second place finish in the 2009 odwalla/Nike Classic at Negoesco Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Dons (3-1-0) finished 1-1 in the tournament, falling to eventual champion Long Island on Friday.
San Francisco played a groggy first half, but managed to get up 1-0 at 18:47 when freshman forward Laura Gordon (2) quick touched it into the goal after a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Megan Bucci. The Dons only had three tries in the first period.
After half, USF came out more aggressive, scoring twice off nine shots. At 53:02 junior midfielder Lauren Maris (2) got foot on a deflected ball, scoring from the right side to put the Dons up 2-0. Senior midfielder Kristina Hall (3) put the game out of reach for the Stags when she landed a straight shot from 25 yards out in the 78th minute to make it 3-0 Dons. Gordon received an assist on the play.
USF held a 12-9 shot advantage and a 6-1 corner kick advantage. Dons' senior goalkeeper Kelly Pohle had two saves in the win, and Fairfield's Kelly Boudreau had six.
"Great win for us. It was our second game of the weekend, so it was a nice turnaround for us from Friday," said head coach Mark Carr. "The first half we played below the standard of what we expect, but the second half we had a much more convincing performance."
