USF Downs Buffs 2-1 In Women's Soccer

Junior forward Meghan Daly scored from six yards out for the game-winner as USF downed Colorado 2-1 in women's soccer action Friday at Negoesco Stadium. In addition, San Francisco head coach Pamela Kalinoski collected her first career win against the Buffaloes. USF evens their record to 1-1 in the early going of the 2001 campaign, while Colorado falls to 1-2 on the year.
USF and the Buffs fought to a standstill in the first half as Colorado held a 4-1 shot advantage in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Orantes responded to the pressure and recorded three saves in the first period for USF and finished the contest with five.
Freshman defender Ashley Davies scored the first goal of her career at the 64:31 mark on a hooking shot from the left wing to open the scoring for USF. Colorado stormed back with an equalizer less than two minutes later when freshman forward Monique Gillaspie scored off a rebound in the box at 66:21.
Neither team could seize advantage until junior defender Katie Mingst fed junior forward Meghan Daly with less than five minutes remaining to secure the win for USF at the 86:08 mark. It was the first goal of the season for Daly and the 13th of her career on the Hilltop.
Orantes (1-0) collects her first win on the season for USF. Senior Whitney Peterson suffered the loss for Colorado.
USF takes to the road for their next four contests and take on the Hornets of Sacramento State Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Sacramento, Match time is at 5:00 PM.
NOTES: - USF won despite trailing Colorado in shots 10-7 - In the last two seasons, USF has a 3-0-1 record against teams from Colorado, including a double overtime win last season in Boulder against the Buffaloes.
