USF Women's Soccer Takes First Game of Classic 4-0 Over Northridge

Sept. 8, 2006

Final Stats

(San Francisco, CA) - San Francisco welcomed the crowds to Negoesco for the second annual City by the Bay Classic with a drubbing of Cal. State Northrige (2-3-0) 4-0 on Friday night. The four goals are the most the Dons (2-3-0) have scored in a game since a 4-2 victory over Gonzaga in 2004.

Junior forward Fiona O'Sullivan continued her dominance on the ball as she scored first for USF at 12:08 when she shot the ball into an open goal after an assist by freshman forward Samantha Brand. USF took the 1-0 lead into half-time.

Less than two minutes into the second half, senior forward Chelsea Hunt lobbed a slow roller into the net off an assist from freshman midfielder Jenny Jarvie. Jarvie added her first collegiate goal in the 63rd minute with a hard shot into the left side. Hunt and junior midfielder Lauren Tweet were credited with the assists. Three minutes later, Hunt put the lid on the game as she headed the ball into the net off Jarvie's corner kick.

The Matadors really only had one legitimate chance to score when junior midfielder Susie Mischenko drove for the nets, but Dons sophomore goalie Kelly Pohle snagged the ball. Pohle (2-2) earned the win and USF's first shutout victory of the year.

Head coach Pamela Kalinoski praised her team on the win. "This was a great team win. Everyone played really unselfishly out there tonight and it showed in how we spread the ball around. Our defense was fantastic, Kara Briethaupt had another great game. We really dominated on offense and it was great to see Chelsea and Jenny get on the board. I also want to commend Alexis Mielke, she played tremendously off the bench tonight and did exactly what we asked her to do."

Northridge held the 11-8 shot advantage, but just couldn't convert. USF held the corner kick advantage, 6-2.

In the nightcap, No. 24 Long Beach State scored the victory over Utah State 2-0.

The City by the Bay Classic continues on Sunday at Negoesco Stadium. Utah State will take on Northridge in the noon game, with USF and Long Beach closing the tournament with a 2:30 start.
