USF Women's Soccer Blanks San Jose State 8-0
Sept. 11, 2003
USF opened the new Negoesco Field in fine fashion, shutting out San Jose State 8-0, running their record to 3-2. The Dons out-shot the Spartans (1-3) 26-2 in their 2003 home opener and got goals from six different players en route to the win. USF inaugurated the newly installed FieldTurf surface on Negoesco Field.
The scoring started early when in the third minute, junior midfielder Annika Schmidt made a beautiful pass from the left corner to freshman midfielder Shuree Hyatt, who headed it in for the goal. Hyatt would go on to score one more goal in the first half, running her season total to four. For Schmidt, the assist was her team and West Coast Conference leading fifth of the season.
The Dons scored five more times in the first half for a 6-0 halftime lead. Freshman forward Chelsea Hunt scored her second goal of the season in the eleventh minute. Sophomore Forward Liz Sylva scored her first goal of the season in the 24th minute, with assists going to Hunt and Hyatt. Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Gray also added a penalty kick in the 20th minute, her second tally of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Ashley Davies capped off the first half scoring in the 43rd minute, with Hyatt getting her second assist of the game.
The second half looked much like the first, as the Dons continued to pressure the Spartans defense, getting good looks at the goal. In the 65th minute, Schmidt showed some dazzling footwork, slicing up the San Jose State defense and finding the right corner unassisted for her second goal of the season.
Davies would round out the scoring for the Dons with her second goal of the night, taking a nice lead pass from junior defender Alexis Moren, who recorded her first assist of the season. Davies shares the team lead with Hyatt at four goals apiece.
Although the offense was focal point of tonight's win, the defense, led by senior Shannon Allen and junior Laura Ott did a great job of keeping the Spartans from mounting any real threat in the game. Senior goaltender Jennifer Orantes did not face a single shot and picked up her third win of the season, running her career total to 15 in the Green and Gold. Freshman goaltender Beth Everett replaced Orantes in the 66th minute and preserved the shutout with a pair of saves.
The Dons take the field again on Sunday as they host the University of Pacific Tigers, scheduled for a 2:00 PM start at Negoesco Stadium. The USF men's soccer team precedes the women with a noon match against Holy Cross in the 2003 diadora Classic.
