(Stockton, CA) - San Francisco had some early scoring chances, but couldn't convert as the Dons fell to Hawaii 5-0 in their final game of the 2008 Pacific Fall Classic in Stockton on Sunday morning. After a tough game, USF finishes the tournament 1-1 after a 1-0 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Friday. USF (3-3-1) had four good scoring chances (three in the first and one in the second), but Hawaii's (2-3-1) goalkeepers, Kori Lu (3) and Nicole McClure (1), kept the ball from reaching the net. Dons goalies didn't fare as well, allowing five goals in the game. Junior Kelly Pohle started the game, allowing three goals, but also earning three saves in 67 minutes. Hodgson came in as a sub at the 67:34 mark, making her 2008 debut, and gave up two Rainbow Wahine goals in the final 22 minutes of the match. Vanessa Bailey started the scoring for the `Bows off a rebound in the 22nd minute. Kelli-Anne Chang was credited with her first assist of the day. Taryn Fukuroku made it 2-0 six minutes later when she landed one from 20 yards out. Chang earned assist number two on the play. In the 34th minute, Tehane Higa got the final goal on Pohle, off a corner kick from Rachel Domingo. At 69:25, Higa scored again on a penalty kick, this time on Hodgson. The final score came in the 87th minute when Change flicked the ball passed Hodgson into the net. Senior midfielder Katherine Kimure and freshman defender Kallie Caldwell led the Dons with two shots each. Sophomore defender Lauren Maris, freshman forward Kelli Woodard, and freshman midfielder Meritt Peterson each had one shot on the day.
"This was a weird game," said head coach Mark Carr. I thought we dominated the early running and had great possession and some chances to score. Hawaii took their chances and we didn't, simple as that." USF returns to action this Thursday, September 18, hosting San Jose State. The non-conference match at Negoesco is set to begin at 5:00 PM. |
