USF Women's Soccer Defeats San Jose State 2-1

Sept. 18, 2008

Final Stats

(San Francisco, CA) - Freshman Nicole Moore is proving she has a major impact on San Francisco women's soccer, as the forward scored both goals for the Dons in a 2-1 victory over San Jose State in non-conference action at Negoesco Stadium on Thursday night. USF jumps over .500 with a 4-3-1 record and dropped the Spartans to 1-4-2.

Moore scored her second and third goals for the season, both off corner kicks. At 14:34, Moore chest bumped the ball into the goal after the keeper missed an initial grab off freshman defender Lauren Abarca's corner kick. The same tandem put the Dons up 2-0 less than a minute later. Abarca's corner sailed to the far side of the goal and Moore shot it into the right side.

Abarca's assists are the first and second of her career. Moore led the Dons with three shots on goal and senior midfielder Katherine Kimure had two shots. Freshman midfielder Abbey Kaufman, freshmen forwards Kelli Woodard, Megan Bucci, and Molly Hall each had one.

San Jose State mounted a comeback, scoring with just under 11 minutes remaining. Shanelle Furner shot it through the right side, passed Dons junior goalkeeper Kelly Pohle. Jessica Ingram earned the assist off the free kick.

Pohle allowed the one goal, and earned two saves in the win. Spartans goalie, Jordan Santos allowed two goals and had five saves in the match. Both teams had nine shots on the evening.

"I'm very happy that we scored two goals today," said head coach Mark Carr. "We came out with a good attitude, but we took our foot off the gas and let them get back in the game. It was a great game, but I hope we can move forward and learn from our mistakes."

Previous schedules had the Dons game against Pacific at 7:00 PM on Sunday, September 21. The correct game time is 5:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium.
