USF Women's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision at Arizona
Sept. 21, 2003
(Tucson) - USF women's soccer dropped a tough 3-1 decision in the blazing heat at Arizona in non-conference action Sunday afternoon. Freshman forward Shuree Hyatt scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season for the Dons (3-5-0) on a header off a brilliant serve from sophomore defender Cami Hernandez. San Francisco battled, but suffered a big blow when junior midfielder Annika Schmidt was given a controversial red card at the 33:12 mark with USF leading 1-0.
Playing a man down, the Dons could not answer the Wildcats (4-3-0), who tallied three unanswered goals for their second straight win. USF applied pressure in the second half, firing eight shots, compared to just two attempts in the first period, but could not find the back of the net.
Hyatt led the way for USF with three shots, while freshman midfielder Chelsea Hunt and senior defender MacKenzie Kerr each added a pair of attempts on the Wildcats' Natalie Juarez (2-1-0), who recorded three saves. Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Orantes (3-5-0) suffered the loss for the Dons making a season-high eight saves on 24 shots.
Head coach Pamela Kalinoski was impressed with the way her team dealt with adversity during the match.
"We really competed today and battled through some adversity, which is a real tribute to the character of the team. I thought Jennifer Orantes and Laura Ott played extremely well for us in the second half. Shuree Hyatt had a great goal off a terrific service from Cami Hernandez," Kalinoski said.
USF returns to action when they travel south for a non-conference match at #24 Stanford. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Maloney Field.
