USF Women's Soccer Beats San Jose State 2-0
Sept. 23, 2005
(San Jose, CA) - USF (2-7-0) came out strong early to get their second win of the 2005 season on Friday, beating San Jose State (0-8-1) 2-0. The win breaks a five game losing streak.
31 seconds into the match, the Dons struck the first blow after sophomore forward Lindsea Swisher tapped the ball into the goal on a cross from junior forward Chelsea Hunt. Swisher then added an assist to senior mid-fielder Stephanie Gray who scored from 20 yards out in the 17th minute to make it 2-0. Both USF goals were scored against San Jose State senior goalkeeper Adrienne Herbst.
The Dons continued to dominate the defensive side of the ball through the second half, keeping the Spartans scoreless. San Jose State shot the ball 21 times on the night, but couldn't find the net. The shut-out belongs to both freshman goalie Kelly Pohle, who started the game, and freshman keeper Anika Steig who replaced Pohle in the second half. Steig made four saves in her collegiate debut.
Head coach Pamela Kalinoski praised her team's aggressive play and great defense throughout the match.
"The game was very physical and I think our girls responded well. I thought defensively Pohle and Steig did a great job and overall we were solid. I'm proud of the girls; it was a good team victory. We've had a tough first part of the season and it's nice to get a win and take that into Sunday's game," Kalinoski stated.
San Francisco continues play at home on Sunday versus Cal State Northridge. The game, at Negoesco Stadium, begins at Noon.
