USF Topples San Jose State 2-0 As Hunt and O'Sullivan Score
Sept. 26, 2004
Chelsea Hunt scored midway through the first half and Fiona O'Sullivan scored early in the second half to pace USF to a 2-0 non-conference women's soccer win over San Jose State Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.
Hunt took a nice pass from teammate Shuree Hyatt and curled it over and around Spartans' Adrienne Herbst from 12 yards out at 20:29. It was Hunt's second consecutive game-winning goal and her third winning marker of the season.
The Dons (5-3-3), who dominated play from the opening whistle, outshot visiting San Jose State (2-7) nine to four, and were rewarded in the 51st minute when freshman Fiona O'Sullivan knocked in a pass from Stephanie Gray at 50:06 for her first collegiate goal.
Stephanie Beall recorded her third shutout of the season, recording two saves. The Dons have allowed just three goals in their last five contests.
"It was one of those Northern California rivalry-type games," said Dons' coach Pam Kalinoski. "Whenever two local teams get together the intensity is turned up.
"It was great for Fiona (O'Sullivan) to get her first collegiate goal," she continued. "And what can you say about Hunt? She's been a force for us, with some big-time goals.
"I'm also really proud of our defense, they did not allow San Jose to get into an attack mode for most of the game."
USF has just one pre-conference game left (vs. UC Davis at home on October 8) before opening WCC play at St. Mary's on October 10.
