(Northridge, CA) - San Francisco women's soccer played Cal State Northridge to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Sunday in non-conference action. The Matadors (5-3-1) barely edged out a shot lead, 20-17 over the Dons (4-5-2). Northridge started the scoring just under 15 minutes into the game. Midfielder Nancy Avesyan shot the ball into the left-hand side of the goal from three yards out after a pass from midfielder Sonia Espitia. USF wouldn't be silenced however as they tied it up in the 84th minute to force the game into overtime. Freshman defender Kallie Caldwell kicked the ball into the left-hand side after receiving the cross on a free kick from junior forward Kristina Hall. Neither team could break through in the first or second overtimes, ending it at 1-1. Caldwell's goal is her first collegiat goal. Senior midfielder Katherine Kimure led the Dons with seven shots, six on goal. Freshman forward Nicole Moore had three shots, while freshman forward Kelli Woodard and junior forward Samantha Brand each had two. Sophomore defender Lauren Maris and freshman forward Megan Bucci added one a piece. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Pohle played the entire 110 minutes between the posts and recorded seven saves, adding to her team leading total of 43. Matadors' goalie Leah Elliot also played the entire 110 minutes and recorded nine saves on the day.
"Awesome team performance today," said head coach Mark Carr. "We showed a lot of spirit and resolve to get back in the game. I am so excited for Kallie to score her first collegiate goal. We had opportunities to win it, but a tie is a great result on the road."
USF has a bye this Friday and will not return to action until Sunday, October 5 against Cal State Bakersfield at Negoesco Stadium. Kick off is set for 1:00 PM. |
