Women's Soccer Falls to No. 14 BYU 1-0

Sept. 30, 2006

Final Stats

(Provo, UT) - USF played tough defense and battled for 90 minutes, but fell to No. 14 BYU 1-0 in non-conference soccer action at South Stadium on Saturday night. The Dons fell to 4-7-1 while the Cougars improve to 9-1-1.

BYU controlled the action throughout the first half of play, out shooting the Dons 9-3 but still could not manage to take advantage of several close opportunities.

Cougar's senior forward Annie Zwahlen came very close early in the half when the ball came free in front of her about 10 yards out on the right side. However USF's sophomore keeper Katie Hodgson came over to make a diving save. A couple minutes later junior forward Carolyn Swenson drove the right side between a pair of Don defenders and sent a pass across to junior midfielder Natalie Nate on the left side but her header went just wide of the goal.

USF had a chance to break through in the 11th minute but sophomore defender Jessica Duty's shot came up just wide of the net.

The Cougars controlled the action the rest of the first half but a tough Don defense kept them away from the nets.

BYU had another close chance late in the half when senior midfielder Jenavieve Phillips fired a rocket from 20 yards out that bounced off the cross bar and out.

The Cougars came out in the second half and continued to control the action, keeping Hodgson on her heels almost the entire half. She made several tough saves in the half as BYU once again out shot the Dons 11-2 in the half.

BYU finally got on the board in the 78th minute when sophomore forward Jessica Aquino sneaked the ball passed Hodgson after an assist from sophomore forward Katie Larkin.

Head coach Pamela Kalinoski took the positives from the loss. "Our defense played so well today. To hold a top 15 team to one goal is great. The girls came out and battled for 90 minutes. A game like this is a measuring stick for us and it will just prepare us for our tough WCC schedule."

USF returns to action on Monday, October 2 in Logan, UT. The match against Utah State begins at 2:00 PM.
