Oct. 5, 2001
(San Diego) - USD got a pair of goals from Val Strocco and Casey Loveland in a 6-1 West Coast Conference women's soccer victory against San Francisco Friday at Torero Stadium in the league opener for both teams. USF (3-4, 0-1 WCC) was pressured from the opening whistle as San Diego (6-3, 1-0) compiled a 26-10 advantage in shots for the contest.
For the Toreros the fireworks started at the 14:28 mark and USD would score three times in less than four minutes to take a 3-0 lead before USF sophomore midfielder Shannon Allen found the back of the net at the 41:02 mark. For Allen it was her first goal of the season. Junior midfielder Kirsteen Buchan recorded the assist.
USF could not slow the Torero onslaught and USD added three more goals in the second half, attempting 12 shots to just five for the Dons.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Beall suffered her first loss of the season, allowing six goals on 26 shots. Beall recorded 10 saves for USF.
USF returns to action Sunday when they host Bay Area rival Cal Sunday, Oct. 7. Match time is at 1:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium. The Golden Bears enter the contest ranked sixth in the nation in the Soccer Buzz poll and own an 8-2 overall record.
