USF Women's Soccer Strikes Twice, Defeats Cal State Bakersfield 2-0

Oct. 5, 2008

Final Stats

(San Francisco, CA) - USF came out aggressive early, getting two shots on goal within the first 10 minutes, but didn't manage to score until the second half. The Dons (5-5-2) ended up out shooting Bakersfield (4-9-1) 10-8 and owned a slight corner kick advantage, 3-2.

At the 53:18 mark, freshman forward Nicole Moore earned her team leading fourth goal off a goalie deflection. Dons' freshman defender Abbey Kaufman passed the ball to freshman forward Kelli Woodard who shot the ball toward the goal. CSUB's goalkeeper Marin Constantinou (4-8-1) put up her hands to stop the ball, but deflected it straight to Moore's feet.

Just under 20 minutes later, at 72:09, Constantinou fell in an attempt to stop senior forward Alexis Mielke from scoring, but Mielke jumped over her and scored from just inside the eight-foot box for her first goal of the season. Junior forward Kristina Hall had the assist.

Dons' senior goalkeeper Kelly Pohle (4-3-1) had two saves on the night in 85:47 minutes. Freshman Sarah Garland played the final 4:13 but did not record a save. Constantinou had five saves for the Road Runners.

Senior midfielder Katherine Kimure led the Dons with four shots on goal in the contest. Moore had two shots, while Kaufman, Mielke, sophomore defender Lauren Maris, and freshman defender Angela Vuona each had one.

"It's nice to get back to winning with a shutout at home," said head coach Mark Carr. "The two goals were created by our work rate and sometimes you have to grind out wins that way. It's important for us to keep momentum up before we open up conference play at Saint Mary's next week."

USF returns to action next Friday, October 10 versus Seattle University. Kick off at Negoesco Stadium is set for 5:00 PM.
