San Francisco Stymies #6 Cal 3-3 In Women's Soccer

Oct. 7, 2001

Box Score

(San Francisco) - Junior midfielder Stacey Caro scored a pair of goals in the second half, including the equalizer as USF secured a 3-3 women's soccer deadlock against Cal in non-conference action Sunday at Negoesco Stadium. After struggling on both ends of the field in their last two outings, the Dons (3-4-1) stormed back against the #6 Golden Bears (8-2-1) and played strong soccer for 120 minutes.

Cal got on the board first at the 4:27 mark when Laura Schott would find the back of the net for the 10th time of the season off a free kick assist from Brittany Kirk. Schott would later add her 11th tally of the year on a penalty kick at 32:17. Junior forward Meghan Daly would knot the contest at 1-1 with her second score of the year, striking on a rebound off Bear's freshman keeper Mallory Moser at 29:24.

Cal took a 2-1 advantage at intermission, despite trailing in shots 4-3 in the first 45 minutes. The Golden Bears wasted no time in the second half when Kim Yokers scored her third goal of the season at 46:27 from a short cross from Krysti Whalen.

Trailing 3-1, the stage was set for Caro, who entered the season without a goal in her career and has made up for lost time this season. Caro punched home another rebound off Moser at 55:32 for her fourth score of the 2001 campaign and converted her team-leading fifth goal of the year at 71:32 on a cross from Daly, who collected her second assist of the year.

At the end of regulation, USF and Cal fought the stalemate for another 30 minutes to no avail. The Bears held a 15-10 shot advantage for the match, including a convincing 4-1 edge in the overtime periods.

San Francisco sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Orantes went the distance for the Dons, allowing three goals, while facing 15 shots and recorded seven saves. Moser also played the full term for Cal and allowed three scores on 10 shots and recorded four saves on the afternoon.

USF returns to action when they travel to Sacramento Tuesday, Oct. 9 to face the Hornets of Sacramento State. Match time is at 4:00 PM at Hornet Stadium.
