USF Women's Soccer Falls to Saint Mary's 3-1
Oct. 9, 2005
(San Francisco) - Saint Mary's (7-4-1, 1-0-0 WCC) proved to be too much in the first West Coast Conference game of the year for USF (2-10-2, 0-1-0 WCC), as the Dons fell to the Gaels 3-1 on Sunday.
Gael senior forward Katie Frattone recorded her second career hat-trick after scoring all three goals for Saint Mary's in the first half. Her first goal came at the 22 minute mark as she just beat Don freshman goalie Katie Hodgson to the right side of the goal. Nearly nine minutes later, Frattone added goal number two after an assist on a throw in by freshman forward Nikki Schrey. Frattone finished off her scoring in the 35th minute on a shot 18 yards out. Schrey was also credited with an assist on that play.
The Don's lone score came 20 minutes into the second half as freshman defender Katherine Kimure tapped the ball into the goal passed Gael senior goal keeper Alicia Artuso. The assists were credited to freshman mid-fielder Jessica Gaskin on the corner kick and to senior mid-fielder Stephanie Gray on the pass.
Kimure also scored a would-be goal early in the first half, but was called offsides to negate the point.
Don head coach Pamela Kalinoski noted the good play of Kimure on Sunday.
"I want to commend Katherine. She scored the goal in the first half that got called back, but she was just a constant presence and force. For a freshman to step up in her first WCC game and have that kind of presence, that's exciting for us as far as the long term," Kalinoski said.
Kalinoski also spoke on today's level of play and the challenge the conference season brings.
"My girls battled. It's the WCC; it's a whole new season. It's a different level and I think we rose to the challenge of the game. But we've got our work cut out for us the next six games and the girls did a lot of great things. We had some mistakes and break downs and they punished us for it and that was the difference in the game," Kalinoski added.
USF returns to the road on Friday with a match against San Diego at 7:00 PM.
