USF Women's Soccer Falls to Saint Mary's 2-0 in Conference Opener

(Moraga, CA) - In West Coast Conference opening action, San Francisco fell to Saint Mary's 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Dons (5-7-2) had eight shots in the match, while the Gaels (8-4-1) had 12.

Neither team could push through a goal in the first half after recording five shots a piece. SMC broke it open in the second half, scoring both goals within three minutes of each other.

The game winner came at 75:46 when junior midfielder Ashley Nied scored on a header off senior midfielder Danielle Spann's free kick. At 78:30, the Gaels got an insurance goal from sophomore midfielder Mercede Koning, who one-timed it from three yards out off a cross from Spann.

Freshman forward Nicole Moore and freshman defender Kallie Caldwell led the Dons with two shots each in the match. Junior forwards Kristina Hall and Samantha Brand, senior midfielder Katherine Kimure, and freshman forward Molly Hall each had one.

Senior goalkeeper Kelly Pohle had five saves in 90:00 minutes.

USF continues conference play next weekend, traveling to San Diego on Friday and Santa Clara on Sunday.
