USF Blanks Portland State 2-0 In Women's Soccer
Oct. 14, 2001
(San Francisco) - USF earned their second shutout win in a week with a 2-0 victory against Portland State Sunday in non-conference women's soccer action at Negoesco Stadium. San Francisco (5-5-1), playing in their third match in six days showed signs of fatigue, but were able to fend off the Vikings (0-11-2).
After going scoreless for nearly the entire first half, the Dons found the back of the net in the closing seconds as sophomore forward Rebecca Shook took a through ball from junior defender Katie Mingst and fired it into the upper left corner from 15 yards out with four seconds remaining. For Shook, it was her second goal of the season and her first game-winner of the season.
Junior forward Meghan Daly added an insurance goal at the 88:56 mark on a nice curling shot to the upper corner from 10 yards for her third tally of the season. USF held a 12-8 shot advantage over Portland State, including a 7-3 margin in the first half.
Sophomore keeper Stephanie Beall collected her second consecutive shutout win of the season to improve her record to 4-1 on the year. Beall recorded four saves against the Vikings.
Portland State got a pair of shots each from freshman forward Jamie Giger and senior midfielder Lori Mansoor. Freshman keeper Gretchen Pietras allowed 2 goals on 12 shots and recorded four saves on the afternoon.
USF returns to action when they host Bay Area rival San Jose State in non-conference action on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Match time is at 7:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium.
