USF Women's Soccer Beats San Diego 2-1 in Double Overtime
Oct. 14, 2005
(San Diego) - Junior forward Chelsea Hunt keeps on rolling for the Dons (3-10-2, 1-1-0) as she scored both of USF's goals in Friday's double overtime win over the Toreros (3-9-1, 0-2-0). This is the sixth time Hunt has had multiple scores in her career and her second in as many weeks.
Hunt tallied her first goal at 64:29. The unassisted cross was deflected by a USD defender and got passed Torero freshman goalie Brittany Cameron.
San Diego tied it up less than a minute later after sophomore defender Vanessa Vella skipped one passed Don freshman goalie Katie Hodgson on an indirect free kick. The assist was credited to sophomore forward Amy Epsten.
The two teams were kept scoreless the rest of the second half and through one overtime period before Hunt scored once again. At 103:55, Hunt headed in the shot from the left post after a free kick by freshman defender Jessica Duty.
Hodgson had 16 saves on the night, which is the seventh highest total in the nation this season.
Head coach Pamela Kalinoski comended Hodgson on her play.
"Hodgson played an absolutely phenomenal game and kept us in it with her 16 saves, and for a freshman to step up in the game like that, she was the difference maker."
Kalinoski was also proud of her team as a whole.
"I think we played the best we ever have as a unit and we just battled through some adversity in the sense that it took us a while to find our rhythm in the game and it was a definite test of resiliency and character. At no point did we give up. The girls kept battling, they never let down."
The win over USD was the first for Kalinoski at USF.
The Dons return to WCC action on Sunday against Santa Clara. The match, in Santa Clara, begins at 1:00 PM.
