USF Women's Soccer Falls to No. 5 Santa Clara 5-0
Oct. 16, 2005
(Santa Clara) - USF (3-11-2, 1-2-0) played tough, but could not get a win against the No. 5 team in the Country, as SCU (13-2-1, 3-0-0) took the WCC match 5-0.
The Broncos dominated the ball throughout the first half, scoring three goals against Dons freshman keeper Katie Hodgson. While allowing the three goals, Hodgson also had eight saves and is currently the team leader in that category.
Santa Clara started the scoring early as freshman mid-fielder Haley Siegel got foot on a loose ball four minutes into the match. Five minutes later, sophomore defender Meagan Snell assisted junior forward Tina Estrada to the goal. The final score of the period came in the 24th minute when Siegel had another unassisted shot from five yards out.
Don freshman Kelly Pohle started at the net in the second half and kept the Broncos scoreless until 85:50 when junior defender Elyse Shelger shot one in to the far post on an assist by junior forward Bonnie Bowman. SCU scored the final goal of the game with less than 20 seconds left when Shelger booted a loose ball from fifteen yards out.
Pohle had three saves in the period and was helped defensively by Dons freshman Lauren Candia.
Head Coach Pamela Kalinoski praised Candia's and both goal keeper's defense.
"I want to commend both goal keepers, I thought they did a tremendous job in the game and the pressure they were under and the shots they had to absorb. I also want to commend Lauren Candia, she did a great job coming in off the bench as a freshman against a top 5 team and she was a difference maker for us."
USF returns to action at home next Friday, Oct. 21 against WCC foe Pepperdine. Kick off is set for 7:00 PM.
