USF Women's Soccer Wins 2-1 at Gonzaga in WCC Play
Oct. 17, 2003
(Spokane, WA) - San Francisco scored a pair of goals in the first half and solid defense made them stand for a 2-1 West Coast Conference women's soccer victory against Gonzaga Friday afternoon at a blustery Martin Field. USF (5-9, 1-1 WCC) scored early on a goal off a direct kick by junior midfielder Annika Schmidt at the 5:46 mark, but Gonzaga (8-6, 0-2 WCC) answered back to deadlock the score at 1-1.
Freshman forward Shuree Hyatt scored on a breakaway goal at 34:24 for the game winner. Hyatt's team-leading sixth goal of the season, was a pretty one, floating into the left upper corner from the right wing. San Francisco fired 10 shots in the first half.
Gonzaga held a 3-0 shot advantage in the second half and took seven corner kicks, but the Dons defense, keyed by an excellent effort from Hyatt and junior defender Laura Ott, denied the Bulldogs.
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Orantes (5-9) collected her fifth victory of the season, making four saves on six shots. It was the 17th career victory for Orantes.
Head coach Pamela Kalinoski was pleased with the way her team played in windy conditions in a crucial road contest for USF.
"I thought the efforts by Shuree Hyatt on both ends of the field and the way Laura Ott coordinated the defense were outstanding for us today. Jen Orantes did a nice job back there under a lot of pressure - especially in the second half. It is a good win for us, especially coming on the road in a tough environment in an important league match," Kalinoski stated.
USF returns to action Sunday when they take on defending national champion Portland at Merlo Field. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
