Final Stats

(San Francisco, CA) - USF women's soccer held the No. 25 San Diego Toreros to a 2-2 tie until the 86th minute, but fell 3-2 in West Coast Conference action at Negoesco Stadium on Sunday morning. The Dons (6-3-5, 1-2-0 WCC) fall in consecutive games for the first time all season.

San Diego (8-5-2, 2-1-0 WCC) was first to the board, scoring at 31:16 to make it 1-0 in the first half. Natalie Vinti scored on a corner kick. But USF rallied back and 11 minutes later freshman defender Ashlyn Mazur headed the ball into the goal after junior defender Ashley O'Brien placed a perfect cross from a corner kick.

USF took the 2-1 lead early in the second half. At 50:17, freshman midfielder Aly Drake touched it into the open goal after a quick pass from freshman forward Megan Connor. The lead would remain for 11 minutes, before the Toreros tied it at 2-2 after a questionable foul call by the center judge. Vinti crossed the ball in front of the goal after a free kick and Christine Mock headed it into the net.

USD took the 3-2 lead after Mock passed to Addie Cartan who pushed it in after a quick melee in the box.

San Diego held the shot (10-6) and corner kick (7-2) advantages in the match. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Pohle had three saves. Senior midfielder Kristina Hall led the Dons with two shots. Mazur, Drake, Connor, and sophomore midfielder Kallie Caldwell each had one.

"Obviously we're disappointed with the loss," said head coach Mark Carr. "I've never experienced a game when a call by the referee has changed the momentum and given another team a new life. After the free kick, the momentum swung. But I'm proud of my players. We scored two goals and were up 2-1 against the No. 25 team in the country. I think it's a move in the right direction for us. I feel sorry for our kids, but I'm proud of them at the same time."

USF returns to action next weekend, heading to the Pacific Northwest for two West Coast Conference matches. Friday, the Dons will meet Gonzaga in Spokane, WA for a 3:00 PM match. Sunday, USF travels to Portland for a noon start.
