USF Women Blanked 3-0 at Loyola Marymount
(Los Angeles) - Loyola Marymount scored two goals in the first half and added another late to post a dominating 3-0 shutout against San Francisco Friday afternoon in West Coast Conference women's soccer action at Sullivan Field. The Dons (7-6-3, 1-3-0 WCC) drop their third straight league match, while the Lions (8-5-3, 1-2-1 WCC) collect their first conference win of the season. The first goal of the game occurred in the 17th minute of the first half as LMU forward Whitney Temple's shot went passed a stunned Stephanie Beall, the USF senior goalkeeper. Assisting on the goal for LMU was Tana Smothermon and Lori Sims. For the Dons, this is the third game in a row that they have allowed the game's first goal and as a result they have lost three straight.
After the early goal by LMU, San Francisco was unable to regroup and in the 35th minute LMU scored their second goal of the game. Freshman Sara Aldama rocketed a shot from 25 feet out that Beall had no chance in saving. For Aldama it was her first collegiate goal.
As a response to the Lions offensive outburst, USF head coach Pamela Kalinoski made substantial substitutions in hopes of sparking her struggling club.
In the second half USF played with much more focus and applied more pressure on the LMU defense. However, all of their efforts proved fruitless as LMU was able to ice the game with two minutes left as junior forward Kelly Lewandowski chipped a shot over the head of the USF goalkeeper.
USF Head Coach Pamela Kalinoski following the game was honest in her assesment of the game, "LMU is a great team, and I don't think their current WCC record is indicative of that. They made us struggle today and we could not find our rythm as a team all game long. However, on a positive note I think Chelsea Hunt played really well tonight and she gave it her all. Moreover, I also was pleased to see Laura Ott back in the lineup after missing the last few weeks with injuries. I have no doubt that we will bounce back strong for Sunday's game against Pepperdine."
Final statistics in the game were in LMU's favor as they out shot USF 11-4, and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. For USF, this is there seventh consecutive loss against LMU, with their last win occurring in 1997.
San Francisco looks to rebound against Pepperdine Sunday afternoon in Malibu in a WCC match. Game time against the Waves is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. Pepperdine collected their first WCC victory today in a 1-0 decision against Saint Mary's and own an 8-4-2 overall record with a 1-2-1 WCC mark.
