USF Women's Soccer Defeats No. 18 Pepperdine 2-1
Oct. 21, 2005
(San Francisco) - Was it the famous San Francisco fog? USF (4-11-2, 2-2-0) came out playing hard and aggressive against a sluggish No. 18 Pepperdine (10-3-2, 1-2-1), winning the West Coast Conference match 2-1.
Junior forward Chelsea Hunt continued her domination of opponents scoring her tenth goal of the season, her third game winner, with less than one minute left in the second period against Pepperdine's senior `keeper Anna Picarelli. Hunt tapped the ball in on a cross from a free kick from freshman defender Jessica Duty. That is the third time this year Hunt and Duty have paired up for a goal.
Early in the first half, Pepperdine's junior forward Lindsey Redlin scored the first goal of the game after senior forward Megan Woods' shot was deflected off of Don freshman goalie Katie Hodgson. But that was all the Waves could muster in a cold and blistery Negoesco Stadium.
The Dons first goal came at the 30:17 mark as Pepperdine's junior defender Courtney Nelson headed the ball into her own goal after a free kick from Duty.
USF played a woman down for the last thirteen minutes of the game after a Red Card was issued.
Head coach Pamela Kalinoski spoke of how proud she was of her team and the effort they gave throughout the game.
"I just want to commend my team. I think hands down that was the best team effort and the best game we've played all year. To give up a goal in the first five minutes, then be resilient and demonstrate our character to come back and score a goal, we just battled. Then to be down a player on top of it, it was such a tremendous team win."
Kalinoski continued, "They (Pepperdine) are a top 20 team and our girls just never gave up. I want to commend the defense because Pepperdine is an offensive powerhouse and we shut them down. I thought the game was very evenly matched and going down a player and never giving up just shows how resilient my team is. I can't express enough how proud I am of my team, everyone from the bench was engaged and it was just a great night for my girls."
The Dons return to action Sunday at Negoesco Stadium against WCC foe Loyola Marymount. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
