USF Women's Soccer Falls to No. 3 Portland 2-0
Oct. 24, 2008
(San Francisco, CA) - USF women's soccer played spectacular defense on Friday evening, holding the No. 3 team in the country to just two goals in the first half of West Coast Conference play at Negoesco Field. The Portland Pilots (14-1-0, 4-0-0 WCC) scored the two goals within 40 seconds of each other, and the Dons (5-10-2, 0-4-0 WCC) kept them out of the net the rest of the match. Portland's first goal came at 25:08, when sophomore midfielder Sophie Schmidt scored on an unassisted breakaway into the left hand corner after a USF goal kick. 41 second later, at 25:59, Schmidt struck again, touching the ball off a throw in. It looked like Dons junior goalkeeper Kelly Pohle had a save, but the ball deflected off her hands into the goal. USF managed three shots in the match, but were out done by Portland's 22. Junior forward Kristina Hall led the Dons with two shots, and senior midfielder Katherine Kimure had one. Pohle had six saves in the match, bringing her team leading total to 75. Head coach Mark Carr praised his team after the match. "This was an awesome performance," said Carr. "I felt like we had a lot of great possessions and if we can build on that, and take it into Sunday, it will bode well for our team. I wanted to mention the play of Molly Hall and Alyssa Simbahon tonight, they played really well. I'm looking forward to Sunday."
USF returns to action Sunday afternoon, hosting Gonzaga at 1:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium. |
