USF Blanks #20 Pepperdine in WCC Women's Soccer
Nov. 2, 2001
(San Francisco) - USF rode an inspired defensive effort and relentless offensive pressure to upset and shutout #20 Pepperdine 2-0 in West Coast Conference women's soccer action Friday in front of 560 at Negoesco Stadium. With the win USF (9-7-1, 2-3-0 WCC) improves to 1-2-1 against the top-25, while the Waves (9-3-4, 1-3-0 WCC) drop their first game to the Dons since the 1998 campaign.
San Francisco applied the pressure early and sustained it for the majority of the contest, holding a 5-3 shots margin in the first half, although the Waves evened the ledger in the second half as both squads finished with nine attempts. The Dons put together their most consistent performance of the season, keyed by an outstanding effort from junior midfielder Caty Harris. USF's pressure paid off at the 17:38 mark when senior forward Heidi Prestegard flipped the ball over her head to streaking sophomore midfielder Alana Healy, who headed the ball past the keeper off a bounce in the box. For Healy it was her first tally of the season and career at USF.
USF continued pressuring Pepperdine, but did not add the score until the 69:46 mark when Harris was tackled in the box for a penalty kick. Harris' shot beat the keeper right for her third score of the season to seal the victory for the Dons. San Francisco's young defensive unit turned in one of their finest outings of the season. Freshmen defenders Laura Ott and Ashley Davies along with junior Katie Mingst shut down a potent Waves' offensive unit less than a week removed from the biggest win in program history against Santa Clara in Malibu.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Beall did an excellent job for USF, recording her fourth shutout of the season and made five saves on nine shots. Lindsey Brouillette suffered the loss for the Waves after allowing the game-winner to Healy in the first half.
USF head coach Pamela Kalinoski is proud of the effort turned in by her team.
"I am extremely proud of the way this team responded tonight. They really showed me something tonight and I am pleased with the way they executed. Caty Harris and our entire defense did a terrific job tonight," Kalinoski stated.
San Francisco takes to the road for a non-conference road trip, where they will play at Wyoming in a Sunday contest against the Cowgirls in Laramie before heading to Colorado Springs to square off against Colorado College on Monday.
